A COURT magistrate in the Eastern part of Zambia has threatened to jail parents who fail to send their children to school.

Passing judgment in a matter where a 16-year-old boy was charged with trafficking in psychotropic substances, Moses Phiri, a magistrate in the provincial capital, Chipata, which is on the border with Malawi, said the chains of poverty can only be broken by taking children to school.

As soon as Christabel Sampa, a social welfare protection officer, had finished presenting her report over the juvenile, magistrate Phiri placed the juvenile on three-month probation under the custody of officers from the Social Welfare Department.

He however, counselled the juvenile’s parents who were also present in the courtroom.

“If you don’t take your children to school, poverty will not only be a visitor in your house, it will be staying there. I went to school but I want my children to go further than I did. We can only break the chains of poverty if we take our children to school. The levels of education in Eastern Province are embarrassingly low. One day I will start sending parents to jail for not taking their children to school,” warned magistrate Phiri.
