I want WBC title back – Catherine

CATHERINE Phiri says she will not rest until she wins back the World Boxing Council bantamweight championship which she lost to Mexico’s Mariana “Barby” Juarez.

The former WBC champion is currently shaping up for her non-title fight against Flora Machela of Tanzania which she says will be a practice bout for her rematch against Juarez.

I understand that in sports, you lose some and you win some. I am no longer mourning my loss, I have put it behind. Right now, my focus is to win back the title and the next fight is what will determine whether I get a rematch or not, so I am training hard for this fight. I want to use it to prepare myself for the rematch,

Catherine said.

Having achieved a Division 1 in her Grade 12 examinations, Catherine was due to go into college this year but says she has momentarily suspended her academic work to focus on winning the title.

“I was supposed to go into college this year but I think I will just go next year because I have suspended that to concentrate on my boxing career first, I want to win the title back,” suuhe said.

Catherine, 23 said she was preparing for a tough fight against the 27-year-old Dar es Salaam fighter who will be coming into the fight as an underdog with five victories out of her nine fights and losing the rest.

On the other hand, Catherine has won 12 of her 14 fights and lost two.

I will be fighting in Ndola for the first time so I want to give my fans there a good fight. I urge people to turn up in huge numbers so that we can win together. There can’t be Catherine without fans,

she said.

The former Namununga school head girl said she wants to pursue sports science once in college.

Her June 2 clash with Machela will be staged at Ndola’s Zmart Mall where Charles Manyuchi will also square it off with Sherif Kasongo.
